Or if you were in a clothing shop you could see how many products were left in stock, if they had your size or a different colour you may want to try on without having to ask a store assistant. The user who creates it becomes part of the virtual world, immersed within the environment, moving objects around or interacting with different elements using different actions. An enhanced version of the real physical world, it is achieved through the use of advanced technology allowing digital visual elements, sounds, or other sensory stimuli to be delivered right to your smartphone or device.

It may seem like a far off idea, but already prominent artists including Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, and The Chainsmokers have made concerts or performances accessible via the Metaverse for millions of people. Learning has established itself as a core component within the Metaverse, and many organizations and learning and development experts are seeing the unparalleled impact it is already having, and will continue to have, on shaping the workforce and workplace. The key themes these experts voiced in their written responses are outlined in the three following tables. The first table outlines further details tied to the two broad themes mentioned above. The second describes the five most-mentioned reasons that the metaverse is likely to be much more advanced and more broadly adopted by 2040.

So, we got a bunch of experts to break it down for those who still don’t get what the metaverse is all about, AKA most of us. There are a myriad factors, from missed marketing opportunities to manufacturing obstacles, as to why VR hasn’t caught on in a bigger way. But it’s possible that using VR is inherently unappealing for a significant number of people, particularly for frequent use. The Metaverse represents a new destination for individuals and organizations to explore. It’s a place where artists, musicians, gamers, colleagues, learners, and more can connect in ways never before possible.

As numerous tech critics have pointed out, the VR mainstream revolution that has been promised for years has largely failed to come to fruition. Use cases for virtual workplaces range from immersive conference calls to company events, employee onboarding, and design thinking sessions. These virtual workspaces offer a higher level of connectivity for employees where they can do things like hand each other virtual objects, brainstorm on virtual whiteboards, and enjoy the feeling of co-presence that is often lacking in a remote work setting. As the technology evolves, city leaders have an exciting opportunity to play a part in how the metaverse comes to be. Staying informed, proactive and curious about how to engage with it is the critical first step.

The gaming industry has already seen a tremendous change in the technologies used and the response from gamers has been nothing but positive. Since then, it has evolved from a niche concept studied and loved by tech enthusiasts, into a transformative digital landscape that many believe will shape our future. Even as Web 2.0 has descended into a disinformation and privacy nightmare, there is still time to save the metaverse from such a fate, as my colleague Megan Farokhmanesh has written. Until then, people will either get their butts into physical offices or further embrace the Hollywood Squares model. Illenberger says he does see companies more frequently employing VR for safety training and in fields where workers take a more hands-on approach to developing products, like engineering and automotive manufacturing.

VR and AR tech is developing rapidly, and elements of the metaverse are already here, especially in entertainment and gaming. How far the movement goes and what effect it has on the privacy of internet users remains to be seen. The metaverse could generate revenue in countless ways, just like the internet in its current form.

We have a vague sense of what things currently exist that we could kind of call the metaverse if we massage the definition of words the right way. And we know which companies are investing in the idea, but there’s nothing approaching agreement on what it is.
